A 2024 study published in Nature found that the refeeding period after a fast, not the fast itself, is when intestinal stem cells proliferate most — but this same post-fast regenerative burst was also associated with increased tumor formation risk in mice with an existing genetic predisposition to cancer. The researchers were explicit that fasting-refeeding strategies for regeneration need to be approached carefully, not treated as a simple net positive.
Separately, research out of USC found that a fasting-mimicking diet reduced intestinal inflammation and increased intestinal stem cell activity in mice with inflammatory bowel disease, with early-phase signals of anti-inflammatory benefit also observed in a small human trial.
